Dear Pitzer Community,

It is with great sadness that I notify you that our colleague José Serna passed away this morning at Pomona Valley Hospital.

José served as a cook in McConnell Dining Hall for more than 36 years. Respected by his fellow colleagues, José was nominated for Employee of the Month for every month as far back as anyone can remember. He was beloved by his co-workers for his positive outlook and eagerness to help others. “José was an exemplary friend, co-worker and mentor to everyone he worked with, and an inspiration to all of us on campus,” said Jim Marchant.

José is survived by his wife Irma, and his children: José, Brenda, Juana, Diana and Juan.

I will remember José warmly and will miss his presence on campus. I know you join me and Suzanne in sending our deepest condolences to his family and friends.  A celebration reception of his life will be hosted on campus with details forthcoming.

Arrangements are being made to bring a grief counselor to campus tomorrow.  In addition, please remember that counseling and referral services are available at no cost to staff and faculty through the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) from OptumHealth by calling (800) 234-5465. For assistance, contact the Office of Human Resources at extension 18254, [email protected] or in-person at McConnell Center 310.
