CW/TW: Gun violence, loss of life

January 23, 2023

Dear Pitzer Community,

Again this week, we grieve the loss of innocent lives to gun violence.

This time, eleven lives have been taken and many more people injured in a mass shooting during Lunar New Year’s Eve festivities in the Los Angeles community of Monterey Park. Our community supports those who have been directly or indirectly affected, including students, faculty members, or staff who live or have loved ones or friends in the greater Monterey Park community.

I know we also support the feelings and actions of the Asian Pacific American Coalition (APAC), which in an email to students this morning offered the following resources and invited the community to take action with them following this horrific news:

  • The Center for Asian Pacific American Students (CAPAS; 132 Mead Hall) will hold a community space today at 4:30 p.m. The Director of CAPAS is available for drop-in hours from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Today at 9:00 p.m., APAC will host a Lunar New Year Snackie event.

News like this weekend’s can be very difficult to bear, and The Claremont Colleges offer resources, including drop-in counseling, to help support those affected:

Students

Faculty and Staff

I wish us all a day of peace, and time for quiet reflection. I encourage us to remain hopeful for crucial change in our nation and world, and that we find a path forward to a less violent future.

Provida Futuri,

Jill Klein P’15

Interim President
