Dear Pitzer Community,

Happy 2020 and welcome back to campus! I hope you are restored and re-energized by your Winter Break.

We are fortunate to kick off a new decade together here at Pitzer College. Our first semester of the 2020s promises on-going discovery and exploration. Pitzer’s faculty and staff have worked hard to develop rich academic programming including courses, lectures and exhibitions that will engage your curiosity and challenge you intellectually.

As I said to you on arrival day, sample everything, be curious, explore your every interest and make the most of your four years here at Pitzer. Here are some of the highlights of Pitzer’s spring programming. I encourage you to attend as many of these events as you possibly can.

  • Art Exhibitions
    • Candice Lin – Natural History: A Half-Eaten Portrait, an Unrecognizable Landscape, a Still, Still Life – Nichols Gallery, Broad Center
    • Hans Baumann: 5 Distillations (Salton Sea) – Lenzner Family Art Gallery, Atherton Hall
    • Opening reception is on January 25, both exhibitions run until March 26.
  • The Ruth and Lee Munroe Center for Social Inquiry’s spring theme “Human Suffering and the Divine Hiddenness” starts with its first lecture on January 28 at 4:15 p.m. in Benson Auditorium.
  • W.M. Keck Science Center renovation and construction of the new Science Center addition are underway.
  • From Valentine’s Day to February 17th, many of your families will be here for Family Weekend.
  • On February 20, Pitzer hosts the documentary screening tour of At the Heart of Goal: Inside the USA Gymnasts Scandal. A panel discussion with guests connected to the film follows.
  • This year, the Glass Humanities Lecture presents poet Ishion Hutchison on March 31.
  • On May 16, we will come together on the Glass Commencement Plaza to celebrate Pitzer’s 56th graduating class.

This is your time to learn, discover, experiment and explore. We are here to support you with courses and activities on the Pitzer campus and across all seven Claremont Colleges. Take advantage of these robust opportunities.

I am excited to start this new decade with you as we experience a transformative and fulfilling semester at Pitzer College together.

Provida Futuri,

Melvin L. Oliver
