College Board Advanced Placement (AP) Program Exams

“Courses designed to accompany the College Board’s Advanced Placement Program demand college-level work, and the Pitzer faculty may grant credit for superior performance on an AP examination.  Criteria may vary by field group, but no score lower than four will be considered for credit.”  - Pitzer College Catalog

- AP credits are applied toward the 32 course graduation requirement, but may not be used to satisfy an Educational Objective requirement.

- In general, AP credits do not apply to field of major requirements.  Consultation with the appropriate advisor/field group is required for possible exceptions.

- Currently, there is no limit to the number of academic credits Pitzer grants for AP exams.

2012-2013 General Guidelines*

Pitzer awards course credit in all AP subjects/courses.  One course credit is granted for each test score result of 4 or 5 with some exceptions made by individual field groups.  Exceptions are noted below.

Exceptions:

  • • Calculus AB: Score of 4 or 5 earns 1.00 credit for MATH 30 only after passing MATH 031, Calculus II
  • • Calculus BC: Score of 4 or 5 earns 2.00 credits for MATH 30 & MATH 31 only after passing MATH 032, Calculus III.
  • • English Language: Score of 4 earns 0.50 Pitzer course. Score of 5 earns 1.00 Pitzer course.
  • • English Literature: Score of 4 earns 0.50 Pitzer course. Score of 5 earns 1.00 Pitzer course.
  • • French Language: Score of 4 earns 0.50 Pitzer course. Score of 5 earns 1.00 Pitzer course.
  • • French Literature: Score of 4 earns 0.50 Pitzer course. Score of 5 earns 1.00 Pitzer course.
  • • European History: Score of 4 earns 0.00 Pitzer course. Score of 5 earns 1.00 Pitzer course.
  • • U.S. History: Score of 4 earns 0.00 Pitzer course. Score of 5 earns 1.00 Pitzer course
  • • World History: 1.00 Pitzer course is granted for World History after completing HIST 021 PZ /ANTH 021 PZ, 'The World  Since 1492', with a “B” or better.
  • Note:  Only 1.0  course in the field of History may be awarded.
  • • Spanish Language: Score of 4 earns 0.50 Pitzer course. Score of 5 earns 1.00 Pitzer course.
  • • Spanish Literature:  Score of 4 earns 0.50 Pitzer course. Score of 5 earns 1.00 Pitzer course.
  • • Statistics: Score of 4 or 5 earns 1.00 credit for MATH 52 only after passing a college statistics course for which Introductory Statistics is a prerequisite, such as MATH 157,158, or 159 at Pomona College.
  • • Macroeconomics: Score of 4 earns 0.50 Pitzer course. Score of 5 earns 1.00 Pitzer course.
  • • Microeconomics: Score of 4 earns 0.50 Pitzer course. Score of 5 earns 1.00 Pitzer course.
  • • Comp Gov’t. & Politics: Score of 4 earns 0.00 Pitzer course. Score of 5 earns 1.00 Pitzer course.
  • • U.S. Gov’t. & Politics: Score of 4 earns 0.00 Pitzer course. Score of 5 earns 1.00 Pitzer course.
