Pitzer Professor Ming-Yuen S. Ma Wins Society for Cinema and Media Studies Book Award

Resolutions 3

Claremont, Calif. (January 31, 2014) —Pitzer College Professor of Media Studies Ming-Yuen S. Ma’s book, Resolutions 3: Global Networks of Video, won the 2014 Best Edited Collection Award from the Society for Cinema and Media Studies (SCMS). Ming and co-editor Erika Suderburg will receive the award on March 21 during the SCMS Annual Conference in Seattle, WA.

Resolutions 3 explores the wide-ranging implications of video in contemporary media culture. The essays in Resolutions 3 examine the ever-evolving role of video in modern society and the impact of its global reach on everyday life. Published in 2012 by the University of Minnesota Press, Resolutions 3 is the third in a series: Resolution: A Critique of Video Art (1986) was one of the first critical texts on video art in the US and Resolutions: Contemporary Video Practices (1996) analyzed video from theoretical, activist and transnational perspectives.

Resolutions 3 is part of a larger project that included a traveling exhibition and three-day symposium in 2008. The SCMS selection committee called Resolutions 3 “an impressive model for innovative, interdisciplinary media scholarship.”

“Resolutions 3 is a collection of 28 timely and engaging essays (only two are versions of previously published works) on the subject of global video, filling an important gap in the literature on the subject,” the committee noted.

Ming-Yuen S. Ma was born in New York and raised in Hong Kong. After producing experimental media for 15 years, Ma shifted his focus to research and writing. He is also the co-editor, with Pitzer College Professor of Media Studies Alexandra Juhasz, of the Moving Image Review of GLQ: A Journal of Lesbian and Gay Studies. He is currently working on a book about the relationships between sound culture, critical theory and experimental media. Ma earned his BA from Columbia University and his MFA from California Institute of the Arts.
