Claremont, Calif. (September 30, 2013)-- This week in Sagehens Athletics saw the Men’s and Women’s Tennis teams compete at the annual fall Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) West Regionals.

On the men’s side, Jacob Yasgoor ’17 upset top-seeded Warren Wood of CMS 6-3, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals in singles in his first action as a collegiate tennis player. Christopher Wiechert ’14 and Anthony Bello PO ’17, meanwhile, made it to the semifinals in doubles after upsetting the top seed from CMS 8-6.  Graham Maassen ’17 and Josh Kim PO ’17 also won two matches in doubles, before falling to Bello and Wiechert in an all-Sagehen quarterfinal.

Women’s Soccer moved into a first-place tie with Cal Lutheran in the SCIAC after defeating CMS 2-1 in overtime on Wednesday and winning 4-1 against Chapman on Saturday, improving to 5-1-1 overall and 3-1 in the SCIAC. The Sagehens continued to get strong contributions from several Pitzer athletes, including Sara Ach ’14, Mary Stafford ’16, Nicola Ying Fry ’16, Aminah Luqman ’17 and Alyssa Kim ’17.

Men’s Soccer also won a home game on Saturday in the first half of a home doubleheader with the women’s team, defeating Occidental 1-0. Chase Abelson ’17 and Andrew Lind ’14 both started for the Sagehens and nearly scored in the first half, but Abelson was denied by a tough save by the Occidental goalkeeper and Lind hit the post.  Men’s Soccer hosts Chapman on Wednesday this week as it looks to continue the momentum and get back in the SCIAC playoff hunt.

Volleyball had a valiant effort in defeat on Tuesday, pushing No. 5 Cal Lutheran to the brink before falling in five sets, dropping the last two points after the fifth set was tied 13-13. The Sagehens then split two matches on Saturday, defeating Caltech 3-0 and falling to Occidental in another five-setter. Ellen Yamasaki ’15 had a strong week with nine kills against Cal Lutheran in 22 attempts, and eight kills in 11 attempts against Caltech.  Samantha Quesada-Diaz ’17 had a personal best eight kills in the Occidental match.

Men’s Water Polo traveled to play some high-altitude matches at the Air Force Mini-Tournament and dropped all three, although it led host Air Force (ranked No. 20 nationally) 8-7 with three minutes to play before falling 9-8 on a goal with nine seconds left. Stephen Vint ’15 had three goals against Air Force and two against Mercyhurst, while Timothy Hardman ’17 had a goal in the defeat to Mercyhurst as well.

The Sagehens will serve as hosts for some big events this weekend, with the Men’s and Women’s Cross Country teams hosting the annual Pomona-Pitzer Invitational on Saturday, and the Men’s Water Polo team hosting the annual Gary Troyer Memorial Tournament on Friday and Saturday. The Football team, which has been idle the last two weekends, will also be back in action when it hosts defending SCIAC champion Cal Lutheran at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
