Sagehen Round Up for the Week of April 22, 2013
Claremont, Calif. (April 29, 2013)—This week in Sagehens Athletics saw Women's Water Polo win a SCIAC Championship, the Women's Lacrosse team take a thrilling SCIAC Tournament win over CMS, and the Baseball team close out the regular season with a pair of wins to lock up the second seed in the upcoming conference tournament.
Women's Water Polo defended its SCIAC title with a dominant performance in which it never trailed the entire weekend on its way to an 18-7 win over Chapman, a 10-6 win over Occidental and a 10-7 win over Redlands to earn its way back to the NCAA Tournament. Katya Schaefer ’16 tied for team-high honors with nine goals over the three-game weekend, including four in the semifinal win over Occidental and three in the championship win over Redlands, while Alyssa Woodward ’15 added seven goals.
Baseball went 3-1 in SCIAC Round Robin play, and celebrated Senior Day with two home games on Sunday, defeating La Verne 5-4 and Whittier 12-6. The seniors all produced big numbers, especially Erik Munzer ’13, who was 8-for-9 in the two games with five RBI, reaching base in his first 10 plate appearances before finally making an out in his last at-bat. Overall for the week, Munzer hit a torrid .778 (14-of-18). Stuart Gano ’13 had the win in the Whittier game, while Ryan Madden ’15 had three RBI. The Sagehens will be the second seed in the upcoming SCIAC Tournament and will host Redlands at 3 p.m. on Friday in one of two opening-round games.
Women's Lacrosse won the rubber game in its Sixth Street rivalry by knocking off CMS in the opening round of the SCIAC Tournament in overtime by a 12-11 score. Jana London ’14 had seven goals, including the game-winner in sudden death overtime, as seniors Casey Leek ’13 and Emma Molloy ’13 won their final home game at Merritt Field. The Sagehens fell to top-seeded Redlands in the semifinals on Saturday 17-7, despite four more goals from London and two goals from Sarah Markowitz ’16.
Track and Field had its SCIAC Championships this past weekend at Occidental. Alexandra Oxborough-Yankus ’14 had two fourth-place finishes for the women's team in the javelin and the hammer throw, while Rhea Jayachandran ’16 was fifth in the 100-meter hurdles. On the men's side, Greg Hook ’14 finished in sixth place in the 400 meters while coming in under 49 seconds and Bennett Kopperud ’16 also scored points in the 400-meter hurdles.
