Sagehen Round Up for the Week of March 25, 2013

E.J. Lopez '15

E.J. Lopez '15 had the game-winning RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to give the Sagehens a 5-4 win over La Verne on Friday.

Claremont, Calif. (April 1, 2013) — This week in Sagehens Athletics saw the Baseball team take a dramatic home win over defending SCIAC champion La Verne after being down to its final out, and a trio of Pitzer Women’s Lacrosse players earn hat tricks in a dominant second-half performance in a win over Oberlin.

The No. 16 ranked Baseball team took a 3-2 lead into the ninth inning against La Verne at home, before the Leopards rallied for two runs in the top of the ninth after having two outs and nobody on base. The Sagehens were in the same situation in the bottom of the ninth, before getting the tying run home with three straight singles and loading the bases. E.J. Lopez ’15 then stepped up and lined the first pitch back up the middle for a dramatic win.

The teams then played a doubleheader at La Verne on Saturday to complete the three-game series, and the Sagehens were left without its usual No. 2 and No. 3 starters due to injuries, including No. 2 starter Cameron Yen ’16. La Verne won the opening game 6-1 to even the series, but the bats picked up the slack in the nightcap with eight doubles and a homer. Lopez had another big day with two doubles and four RBI, while Erik Munzer ’13 was 3-for-6 with two doubles and four RBI.

Women’s Lacrosse had its only game of the week on Monday, as it defeated Oberlin 14-4 to improve to 8-4 on the season. The Sagehens actually trailed 4-2 early in the second half, and then finished the game on a 12-0 run to break it wide open. Kaitlin Jones ’14, Jana London ’14 and Sarah Markowitz ’16 all had hat tricks. Markowitz came up big with both the tying and go-ahead goals early in the second half to give the Sagehens the momentum, which it kept the rest of the way as it broke open a close game.

Women’s Water Polo got back on track on Saturday with a 9-7 road win at Occidental. After the Tigers fought back from a 7-4 deficit in the fourth quarter to tie it, Katya (Katy) Schaefer ’16 broke the tie with her team-high fourth goal of the match. Alyssa Woodward ’15 also added a pair of goals for the Sagehens, who snapped a six-game losing streak with the victory (although three of those losses were to Division I teams).

Both tennis teams had daunting schedules this week against top 10 opponents, but saw some big individual victories for several players. Marie Fleming ’16 earned a win at No. 4 singles against CMS, the second-ranked team in the nation, while she and Jamie Solomon ’13 teamed for a win at No. 2 doubles against third-ranked Williams. Chris Wiechert ’14 earned a win for the Men’s Tennis team against undefeated Middlebury, ranked No. 9 nationally.

The Pitzer highlight from the CA/NV Championships in Track and Field came from Greg Hook ’14, who broke 50 seconds in the 400 meters, crossing the finish line in 49.97.  Bennett Kopperud ’16 also had a strong effort in the 400-meter hurdles, running a 57.67.
