Sagehen Round Up for the Week of March 11, 2013
Claremont, Calif. (March 18, 2013) —This week in Sagehens Athletics saw the Women's Water Polo team win four of five, while the Baseball team won three of four, including taking a SCIAC weekend series for the fourth time in five tries by winning two of three against Chapman.
Women's Water Polo had a busy week with five matches, including its SCIAC opener, and allowed only 24 goals (4.8 per contest). Katya (Katy) Schaefer ’16 had a big week offensively with 13 goals, including four in a win over Division I St. Francis (NY). Alyssa Woodward ’15 also had eight goals on the week and has now scored at least one goal in all 17 matches this year.
Baseball met Chapman in a three-game weekend series for the first time as SCIAC rivals and took two of three, after defeating Ithaca 16-11 in a non-league game to start the week. Erik Munzer ’13 had a big week at the plate, batting 10-for-18, including 4-for-5 against Ithaca, while Mark Okuma ’15 was 3-for-4 with three RBI. E.J. Lopez ’15 also had a 3-for-4 game in the opener against Chapman, and sealed a 4-2 win in the final game of the series with a diving play at third base for the final out of the game.
Women's Tennis had three matches in three days against ranked opponents and finally suffered its first loss after a 7-0 start, falling to No. 10-ranked Bowdoin on Friday. The all-Pitzer doubles team of Jamie Solomon ’13 and Marie Fleming ’16 earned one of the points against Bowdoin with a dominant win at No. 2 doubles. Men's Tennis also had a busy week and went 2-2, defeating Rochester on Wednesday and Skidmore on Saturday, while falling to Bowdoin and Swarthmore on Friday. Max Sabel ’13 and Frankie Allinson PO ’13 were 4-0 in doubles on the week, including a dominant 8-1 win over No. 5 Bowdoin, while Sabel moved up to No. 1 singles and had a key win in the Skidmore victory.
Softball had a home doubleheader on Saturday against Cal Lutheran and played a pair of one-run games, winning the opener 4-3 and falling in the nightcap 3-2. Ashley Morello ’15 had a big weekend, batting 3-for-4 with an RBI in the opener and then stealing home on the back end of a double steal in the loss in the nightcap.
