Sagehen Round Up for the Week of March 4, 2013

Jamie Solomon ’13 returns to the No. 1 spot for the Sagehens, improving to 5-0 in singles this year.

Claremont, Calif. (March 11, 2013) — This week in Sagehen Athletics news included the Women's Tennis team solidifying its national ranking with a pair of wins over top 15 teams, and the Baseball and Women's Lacrosse teams both taking two out of three.

The No. 12-ranked Women's Tennis team remained undefeated by taking a pair of home wins, defeating No. 15 Trinity (Texas) on Thursday 7-2 and then defeating No. 13 Washington (Mo.) 6-3 on Saturday. Jamie Solomon ’13 returned to the No. 1 spot for the Sagehens in singles for the first time this season, after suffering an ACL injury in the NCAA Championships last May. In her first match back at No. 1, Solomon provided the clinching point in the win over Washington to improve to 5-0 in singles this year. Marie Fleming ’16 provided the clinching point in the win over Trinity with a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles.

Baseball took two out of three from Whittier over the weekend, winning the opener at home 10-0 and then splitting a doubleheader at Whittier. Cameron Yen '16 went the distance to get the complete game victory in the second game of the series, a 3-1 win at Whittier, allowing six hits over nine innings. Erik Munzer ’13 provided the defensive gem of the year in the first game, a 10-0 win at home, when he laid out for a diving catch in center field to turn a double play and kill a Whittier rally early in the contest. Sam Fox ’15 had two RBI for the Sagehens in a 4-3 loss in the series finale.

Women's Lacrosse had a 2-1 week, falling to Susquehanna on Monday and then defeating King's (15-12) and Berry (22-7) on Tuesday and Saturday. Jana London '14 had six goals and two assists against King’s and matched her career high with nine goals in the Berry win, while also adding three assists. Sarah Markowitz ’16 added three goals in the Berry win and Aubrey Douglass ’16 added two. Emma Molloy ’13 had a goal and two assists against King’s.

The Men's and Women's Track and Field teams defeated Occidental in their annual dual meet, dubbed the Battle for the Banner. On the women’s side, Ellen Yamasaki ’15 won the discus with a throw of 99-4, just falling short of 100 feet in a new personal best, while Alex Oxborough-Yankus won the discus and hammer throws. On the men’s side Alex Chong ’16 and Greg Hook ’14 contributed to a win in the 4x100 relay, while Joe Knight ’16 won the high jump with an even six feet and Matt Owen ’13 won the pole vault with an even 13 feet. Bennett Kopperud ’16 also added a win in the triple jump at 39-6.

Women's Water Polo hosted its annual Claremont Convergence tournament at Haldeman Pool, and went 2-2 on the weekend, pulling out a pair of close wins against Cal Baptist (9-8) and Concordia (9-6) and falling to top 10 teams UC Irvine and Long Beach State. Alyssa Woodward ’15 had a strong performance against the top competition, tallying five of the seven goals for the Sagehens against UC Irvine and all three of its goals against Long Beach State. Katya (Katy) Schaefer ’16 also had a big performance in the win over Concordia, tallying a season-high four goals.

Men’s Golf had a 54-hole tournament at The Master’s College on Monday and Tuesday, finishing ninth out of 12 teams. Mitchell Weeks ’16 had the lowest round for any Sagehen this season, shooting a 75 in the second round of the day on Monday.
