Sagehen Round Up for the Week of January 7, 2013

This week in Sagehen Athletics saw both Swimming and Diving teams improve to a perfect 4-0 in the SCIAC, while the Men's Basketball team improved to 5-1 with a statement win over Occidental.

At Haldeman Pool, the Women's Swimming and Diving team won easily, defeating La Verne 217-62 and Occidental 208-76 to improve to 5-0 on the year and 4-0 in SCIAC meets. The men's competition was closer, as the Sagehens edged La Verne 154-132 and took a lopsided win over Occidental (208-54) to improve to 4-1 overall and 4-0 in the SCIAC.

On the women's side, Margaret Pettibone '15 earned a first place finish in the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.29, then gave defending SCIAC Champion Caroline Chang of Occidental a good race in the 200 before losing by less than a second. Dawn Barlow '16 added a first-place finish in the one-meter springboard diving competition for the Sagehens, while finishing second in the three-meter.

On the men's side, Andrew Wright '16 came through with a first place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:24.60), part of a 1-2-3 sweep in the event for the Sagehens, which proved to be pivotal in the narrow win over La Verne. Devon Kennedy '16 finished second in the 500-yard freestyle, William Thorson '16 came in third in the 50-yard freestyle, and Eirik Hansen '15 was part of the victorious 400-yard freestyle relay team in the final event of the day, which clinched the win for the Sagehens.

Men's Basketball dropped a road contest at CSU San Marcos, which is ranked No. 10 in the NAIA, on Tuesday in a non-conference game, but responded with a thorough win over Occidental on Saturday, defeating the Tigers 84-59 to improve to 10-4 on the year overall. Po Grant '13 had nine points off the bench on 3-5 shooting from three-point territory, while James Xavyr Moss '13 added seven points and six rebounds.

Women's Basketball played an outstanding first half against league-leading Occidental, taking a 24-22 lead into the break after holding the Tigers to just 7-29 shooting. However, Occidental came out of the locker room on fire and started the second half with a 24-0 run to earn a 65-46 win. Ruth Shapiro '15 came back from a two-week injury to contribute six points and four rebounds.
