Pitzer College Student-Athletes Earn Top Honors During Fall Awards Season

Claremont, Calif. (December 12, 2012) — Pitzer College student-athletes Jason Cox '13, Alex Johnson '13 and Erik Munzer '13 have been recognized by regional and national organizations for being standouts following outstanding seasons in their respective sports.

Jason Cox
Jason Cox '13

Cox was named to the Men's Water Polo All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) First Team. He also earned second-team honors from the Western Water Polo Association. Cox, who plays center, helped lead the Sagehens to a 19-2 record against SCIAC opponents in the past two seasons, including 10-1 this year. SCIAC champions in 2011, the Sagehens shared the title this year with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) after winning the regular season title by two games and falling to the CMS Stags in the postseason finals. A history major, Cox had a team-high 53 goals this season. Last year, he also led the team in goals with 65.

Alex Johnson
Alex Johnson '13

Johnson earned All-SCIAC and All-West Region Cross Country honors from the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association after finishing second in the SCIAC Championships and fourth in the NCAA Division III West Regionals, coming within five seconds of first place in both 8K races. A three-time NCAA Division III Championships contender and a team captain, Johnson helped the Sagehens qualify for the NCAA Division III National Championships as a team for the first time since 2005. The Sagehens Men's Cross Country program also named Johnson MVP during its year-end awards. He is an English & world literature major at Pitzer College.

Erik Munzer
Erik Munzer '13

Munzer earned first-team All-West honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and was named first-team All-SCIAC. On the Sagehen Men's Soccer team, he is a four-year starter and two-year captain at center back who tallied three goals and an assist this season. He guided the Sagehens to a 2012 SCIAC Championship and an 11-game winning streak, the longest for the program since 1973. A philosophy major and outfielder for the Sagehen Baseball team, Munzer won the men's Athletic Excellence Award for two-sport athletes from the Sagehens athletic department this past spring.

Sagehen teams include soccer, basketball, football, baseball, track & field, golf, tennis, water polo, swimming and diving.
