Pitzer College Student Athletes Recognized for 2009-10 Season

Claremont, Calif (May 6, 2010)—Pitzer College congratulates seniors Zoe Fisher, Melanie Gularte, James Kang, Robert Montalvo and Colin Reinstedt, recognized at the 2009-10 Student Athlete Awards on April 28.This elite group is comprised of college football players from all divisions of play who maintained a 3.2 GPA or better during their undergraduate study.

The Daley Award for Athletic Achievement was presented to Colin Reinstedt, a psychology and Spanish major. Reinstedt was a starter on the men’s basketball team and the best defensive player in the last two seasons. He is also the recipient of the Ducey Award, which is awarded to one SCIAC senior basketball player each year.The NFF Hampshire Honor Society capitalizes on the NFF's current National Scholar-Athlete program, greatly expanding the number of scholar-athletes the NFF can recognize each year and further strengthening the organization's leadership role in encouraging academic performance by the student-athletes who play football at the more than 700 college and universities with football programs nationwide.

Melanie Gularte and Robert Montalvo were presented with the Judie and Frank Fenton Award for Athletic Leadership. Gularte, an economics major and anthropology minor, was the captain and pitcher for the softball team and served as the president of the Student Athlete Advisory Council. Montalvo, a Spanish and media studies major, was the starting defensive back, kicker and captain of the football team. He also received the Michael Aytch ’84 Award for dedication, loyalty and the pursuit of excellence.

The Outstanding Student Athlete Award (female) was presented to Zoe Fisher, a media studies major and captain of the tennis team that represented the Sagehens at the NCAA elite eight championships.

James Kang received the Outstanding Student Athlete Award (male). Kang, an economics major, was the captain and starter for the baseball team and lead the Sagehens to the SCIAC championship this season.
