Pitzer College Professor Receives Literary Honors

Claremont, Calif. (December 03, 2009) — Assistant Professor Brent Armendinger received two prestigious poetry honors from the 2009 Chroma International Queer Writing Competition and the 2009 New Michigan Press/DIAGRAM Chapbook Contest. Armendinger teaches creative writing in the English and world literature field group at Pitzer.

His poem "Wood Shop" received first prize at the 2009 Chroma International Queer Writing Competition. "His poem lifts off the page, as any about flying machines must. It veers tremendously in and out of sense and experience as it travels from memory to knowledge," said Cherry Smyth, judge.

Armendinger's new collection of poems, Undetectable, will be published by the New Michigan Press. It was a finalist in the 2009 Chapbook Contest. "His poems are smart, elegiac and wonderful, filled with formal play, the vapor between rainfall, skies full of knives and the memories of breath," said Ander Monson, editor of The Diagram and New Michigan Press, "Undetectable celebrates and makes visible the body's perforations, the openings between the body and the world, and manifests them in the fracture evident everywhere in this book."

Chroma publishes and promotes edgy, lyrical and challenging prose, poetry and artwork by lesbian, gay, bi and trans-writers and artists from around the world. "Wood Shop" is available at http://www.chromajournal.co.uk/#/competition-2009/4537151823.

Undetectable can be purchased through New Michigan Press and Amazon on December 4. A synopsis is available at http://newmichiganpress.com/nmp/.

Armedinger's recent works include Archipelago published by Noemi Press in March 2009.
