Pitzer College Senior Brian Dolphin Awarded Watson Fellowship
Claremont, Calif. (March 18, 2009) – Pitzer College senior Brian Dolphin ’09 has been awarded a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship to pursue his research project, “The Music of Nature and the Nature of Music.” Dolphin, who studied abroad with Pitzer in Nepal, will continue his research in Cameroon, India, Indonesia, Russia and Norway.
“Music eternally surrounds us, not just on radios and iPods, but everywhere,” said Dolphin, “By getting in touch with the aesthetics that make music functional in nature, I can create the music that so boldly answers the primary philosophical quandary, ‘What is music?’” Dolphin will graduate with a degree in metaphysics in philosophy, science and religion.
Brian Dolphin is one of 40 recipients nationwide to receive a Watson Fellowship for year-long independent research and study outside of the United States.
“We are very proud of Brian as he joins a long list of past Pitzer students to receive this prestigious fellowship,” said President Laura Skandera Trombley, “He exemplifies the excellence of Pitzer students and faculty.”
