Pitzer College Receives Generous Gift from The Ralph M. Parsons Foundation

Grant will Support New Science Learning Community

Claremont, Calif. (May 10, 2005) — Pitzer College has been awarded a generous $250,000 grant from The Ralph M. Parsons Foundation to support the College's Residential Life Project, the largest construction project since its founding. The Foundation's grant will specifically support the development of a Science Learning Community in the first phase of the construction project. The Science Learning Community is one of several thematically based communities that will frame students' residential lives.

"We are delighted that Pitzer College has the strong support of The Ralph M. Parsons Foundation regarding our residence hall living and learning project. The College community is excited about the transformative nature of the project and is proud to have the endorsement of such a fine foundation," said Pitzer College President Laura Skandera Trombley. "Plans for construction of the new residence halls are moving ahead expeditiously, and we anticipate breaking ground this coming September," Trombley added.

Pitzer College is in the first phase of its residence hall project that will add 312 beds, which is projected to be completed by the fall of 2007. There will be two additional phases during the next decade.

Pitzer's new campus master plan is designed to promote social and intellectual interaction within the community. The College's unique liberal arts tradition and distinctive educational objectives are enhanced by a residential and learning community where the boundaries are blurred. The construction of new residence halls will strengthen life inside and outside the classroom by creating a vigorous residential community that links living, learning and leadership.
