Pitzer Joins Others in Day of Community Service

Mexican Consulate offers official identification cards as part of services

CLAREMONT, Calif. (Oct. 5, 2004) Pitzer College will join several local colleges and community organizations for a day of service for the Mexican community on Saturday, October 9. The mobile clinic, "Matricula Consular and Health," offers the opportunity to apply for a "Matricula Consular," an identification card distributed by the Mexican government.

The event will run from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Cal Poly Downtown Center on 300 West 2nd St. in Pomona. This is the first mobile clinic attempted by the Mexican Consulate in many years. "Matricula Consular" applicants are asked to bring proof of birth, some form of identification with photograph, and proof of residence. The card is issued through one of 48 consulate offices.

The clinic service will not only provide the opportunity for individuals to apply for the official identification card, but will provide information on various consulate services as well. The service day will include health information and services through the East Valley Mobile Health Clinic.

The clinic is part of "Community Outreach and Service Week," a program by the Consulate General Ruben Beltran to aid the Mexican community. The community service day, which will include the help of student volunteers from Pitzer College and Cal Poly University, is being sponsored through a partnership between the Mexican Consulate and the Latino Roundtable, Pitzer College, Cal Poly Pomona, Empowered Latinos in Action, Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Pomona Economic Opportunity Center.
