Pitzer College Programs Recognized for Shaping Student Success

U.S. News & World Report cites Pitzer's leadership in "Study Abroad," "Service Learning" categories

CLAREMONT, Calif. (Oct. 1, 2003) — The nation’s college presidents, chief academic officers and deans of students have affirmed what the Pitzer community has known for some time: The College’s Study Abroad and Service Learning programs lead the way for America’s colleges and universities.

Pitzer joined such colleges as Dartmouth, Duke, Georgetown, Grinnell, Syracuse and Carleton in the Study Abroad category. All of the colleges’ programs involve substantial academic work and considerable interaction between the student and the culture.

Pitzer officials frequently credit its Study Abroad program with preparing students for the rigors of Fulbright Fellowship selection. Six Pitzer students were awarded Fulbrights in 2003, which is the highest amount awarded to a college with an enrollment of less than 1,400 students.

The Service Learning category emphasizes volunteering in the community as an instructional strategy and as a requirement in the student’s coursework. Pitzer has a social responsibility requirement for all students. The other honorees in Service Learning include Brown University, Providence College, University of Notre Dame and Vanderbilt University, among others.

In addition to Pitzer’s peer recognition for Study Abroad and Service Learning, the College was ranked as the 5th most diverse private coeducational liberal arts college in the U.S. out of 217 schools. Pitzer also is one of approximately 100 national colleges and universities (out of 465) with an acceptance rate of less than 50% of students who apply.

This is the second year that the U.S. News & World Report’s Guide to America’s Best Colleges has included a list of schools with outstanding examples of programs that contribute to student success. U.S. News invited college officials from around the nation to nominate institutions that serve as models in their respective categories. Colleges and universities that were mentioned most often were then listed in alphabetical order.
