We almost always use propaganda as a term of abuse, as something that other people do, as something that dupes and manipulates other people–Maoist posters, Soviet newspapers, East German films. Most of us recognize by now that America too has its own forms of propaganda, but that also often seems like someone else’s problem. Professor Wakefield will talk about propaganda as a structure, as coterminous with modernity. Modern propaganda is ubiquitous; it maintains the world as we find it.
