Ruth Estévez and Jen Hofer: The Words of Others

March 5 @ 9:35 am - 10:50 am

Palabras Ajenas / The Words of Others is Argentine artist León Ferrari’s most famous literary collage, first published in 1967. The text is a powerful critique of the Vietnam War and US imperial politics, written in the form of a dramatic script. It weaves together texts and quotations from various sources, including news agencies, history books, the Bible, and speeches by political and religious figures.

During this lecture, Ruth Estévez and Jen Hofer will discuss Ferrari’s work and the process of curating, translating, and staging The Words of Others: León Ferrari and Rhetoric in Times of War at REDCAT in Los Angeles.

Ruth Estévez is a writer, curator, and set designer with interdisciplinary interests in performance, architecture and social change. She is currently the director and curator of REDCAT/CalArts Gallery, Los Angeles.

Jen Hofer is a Los Angeles-based poet, translator, social justice interpreter, teacher,  book-maker, urban cyclist, and co-founder of the language justice and literary activism collaborative Antena. In 2012, she received the PEN Award for Poetry in Translation and the Harold Morton Landon Translation Award from the Academy of American Poets.

This event is presented in collaboration with the Pitzer Art Galleries and the exhibition Manifesto: A Moderate Proposal
