Tongva women have overcome numerous challenges similar to those we face today. They have overcome insurmountable odds and created ways to thrive in the face of dangers ranging from tumultuous social conditions and systemic racism to global pandemics like COVID-19. Join Tongva Elder Julia Bogany, and facilitator Violet Luxton as they trace the lives of women like Juana Maria, who overcame eighteen years living in isolation on San Nicolas Island, or Toypurina, medicine woman and revolutionary organizer who united six nations in a revolt against the San Gabriel Mission. Join us as we celebrate Indigenous resilience and courage while learning how to face our fears and stay empowered during difficult times.
