If Only They Would Make Better Food Choices: Confronting Myths About Ethnoracial Health Disparities

Dr. Dawne M. Mouzon, Assistant Professor of the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy and core faculty member at the Institute for Health, Health Care Policy and Aging Research, Rutgers University

This talk will focus on beliefs suggesting that people of color, and low-income ones in particular, lead lifestyles conducive to early death. As the conventional wisdom suggests, “If they would just make better food choices/stop/smoking/go to the doctor more often, they would be able to live as long as whites.” However, a sociological examination of disease among groups of color reveals myriad structural causes for these health inequities.
