Come to a film screening and discussion of social justice in documentary film. Meet filmmakers Yoni Brook and Ted Passon, creators of PBS’s acclaimed DocuSeries Philly D.A. in discussion with Kenny Butler ’21, graduate of Pitzer’s Inside Out Program.
Philly D.A. highlights the progressive civil rights lawyer, Larry Krasner, who ran for and won the District Attorney’s race in Philadelphia in 2017. Through close documentary profile of the new D.A. and the D.A.’s office, the filmmakers provide an intimate and unique insight into the workings of Philly’s (and the US) criminal justice system. As the D.A. brings new and innovative ways to carry out his public mandate, his office comes face to face with the City’s Police Department, the City’s judges, and the Pennsylvania prison system, making public the deep historical role that all these institutions play in the ongoing struggle for public accountability and social justice in the US.
Presented by Media Studies and co-sponsored by IGLAS, 7C Justice Education Initiative, Scripps J.C. Harper Lectureship Fund, and the Teaching and Learning Committee.
