Following the Presidents’ Council of The Claremont Colleges recent message about the fall academic calendar changes (https://www.pitzer.edu/emergency/covid-19), we want to provide updated information regarding New Student Orientation. While Pitzer is currently planning for and working towards welcoming as many students to campus for the fall semester as safely as possible, in the next few weeks the Presidents’ Council, with guidance from state and county public health officials, is scheduled to make a determination about whether students will be living and learning on campus or remotely this fall. If students are able to live on campus in the fall, we do not yet have confirmed move-in dates for new and returning students. We commit to communicating this information to you as soon as these decisions are made.

Regardless of whether or not students are able to return for in-person instruction in the fall, we can confirm that this year’s New Student Orientation will be different from previous years. First, we will not be operating the Orientation Adventure (OA) trips in August as we had planned and are a long-standing tradition at Pitzer. While we know that the OA trips are an important formative experience for new students in our community, our top priority remains the health and safety of our students. Therefore, conducting OA trips during the current COVID-19 pandemic is not feasible at this time. However, we hope that we will be able to plan an alternative to OA trips at a future date when it is safe to do so.

Second, New Student Orientation sessions and processes will include several new online components (e.g. advising, registration, and educational sessions). These sessions and processes normally take place during Orientation in August – we are simply having to pivot to how the content will be delivered in light of COVID-19. The schedule for these sessions and processes will be communicated later in the summer.

Looking ahead, we encourage you to complete the items on your SageDen Checklist. As a reminder, all items on the Checklist have different start and due dates. Additionally, don’t forget to follow @pz_orientation on Instagram for on-going summer engagement opportunities for new students.

Despite the uncertainty that we are all facing, we look forward to welcoming you to the Pitzer community!
