With Championships in Several Sports, the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens Are Having an Outstanding Fall

The Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens combine the best of academics and sports, pursuing a well-rounded collegiate experience that tests both their minds and bodies as scholar-athletes. With the help of our Sagehens supporters and the newly opened Center for Athletics, Recreation, and Wellness, our 21 varsity teams (and the broader Pomona-Pitzer community) have first-rate resources to help them excel—as shown by recent championships.

Sagehens Women’s Soccer Team Earns Third-Straight SCIAC Tournament Championship  With a 3-0 win over CMS on November 5, 2022, the Pomona-Pitzer Women’s Soccer team earned their third-straight SCIAC Tournament Championship and their third-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament.  The Sagehens and Athenas have never met previously in the SCIAC Tournament Championship in its 15-year existence. The two teams have played against each other three times in the SCIAC semifinals, and all went in favor of CMS.  The Sagehens had three different scorers in Amanda Khu PO’25, Genevieve Gray PO’23, and Ella Endo PO’25, while Hannah Hong PO’26 assisted on all three goals for the Sagehens. Sagehens Men’s Football Team Earns Share of First SCIAC Title in Program History   The Pomona-Pitzer Football team earned its first taste of a SCIAC Championship in program history after their 28-14 win over CMS in the Sixth Street Rivalry on November 12, 2022.  The Sagehens and Stags are Co-Champs in the SCIAC with both ending the season with one SCIAC loss; however, the Sagehens will represent the SCIAC in the NCAA tournament. This marks the first time that the Sagehens will enter the NCAA Tournament after a season-best in wins with eight.  Pitzer’s Skylar Noble ’23 led the Sagehens with a 23-35 performance with 220 yards and two touchdowns. The receivers played a huge part in offense as Quinten Wimmer ’24 had seven catches for 119 yards and two scores while he also threw for one with a 22-yard pass to Will Radice PO’23, who ended up with 78 receiving yards of his own. Wimmer was also recently named a SCIAC Athlete of the week.  The defense came up huge for Pomona-Pitzer. Briggs Garrison ’23, Nate Barewin PO’23, and Eamon Glascott PO’26 were all over the field while the defense forced one fumble and two interceptions by George Cutting PO’25 and Garrett Pittman ’23. Sagehens Men’s Cross-Country Team Claims NCAA West Region Championship  On November 12, 2022, the Pomona-Pitzer men's cross-country team won the 2022 NCAA West Region Championship with 37 team points and all seven runners in the top 15. Lucas Florsheim PO’24 won the individual crown with a time of 24:23.2.   Cameron Hatler PO’25 crossed the line in 24:40.3 to take fifth place. Colin Kirkpatrick PO’24 followed with a seventh-place finish at 24:44.1. Ethan Widlansky PO’23 was next at 24:49.7 for tenth place. Nathaniel Getachew PO’26 rounded out the top five as he placed in thirteenth with 24:51.3. Ian Horsburgh PO’24 and Derek Fearon PO’24 rounded out the top seven as the duo crossed the finish in identical times of 24:52.6.  Read the full recap here.     Sagehens Men’s Water Polo Beat CMS to End Regular Season  The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team put an exclamation point on their Regular Season Championship with a 12-10 comeback win over CMS on November 12, 2022.  The Sagehens improved to 17-14 overall and 9-1 in SCIAC play while earning the Regular Season SCIAC Championship and clinching the No. 1 seed in the upcoming SCIAC Tournament.   The Sagehens were led by Benjamin Sasaki PO’23, who netted a hat-trick with four goals in the win. Alexander Peterson PO’24 also had a multi-goal game with two while Pitzer’s Kyle Green ’24, Maxim Koretsky ’25, Andrew Plaschke ’25, and Jack Ryan ’25 as well as Sam Sasaki PO’23 and Zachary Kaplan PO’25 each contributed one. Sagehens Women’s Soccer Team Earns Third-Straight SCIAC Tournament Championship

With a 3-0 win over CMS on November 5, 2022, the Pomona-Pitzer Women’s Soccer team earned their third-straight SCIAC Tournament Championship and their third-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
