Claremont, Calif. (April 23, 2015)—Pitzer College student Braden Bernards ’15 has been awarded a German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) undergraduate scholarship. The scholarship supports highly-qualified undergraduate students who have well-defined plans to study, conduct research or complete an internship in Germany.
Bernards’ proposed research project would examine how growth-oriented local politics and city-branding has impacted Berlin’s landscapes of cultural production. He would be based at Humboldt University of Berlin.
In 2012, Bernards was selected as a Robert Day Scholar and received a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study abroad in Nepal, where he researched rural tourism development and international aid projects along the Great Himalayan Trail. Last year, he studied abroad in Germany for six months and won The Claremont Colleges Library Undergraduate Research Award for his research paper “Squeaky Gears: Bicycling, Dissent, and Political Innovations.”
During his time at Pitzer, Bernards served on the College’s Student Senate and traveled to Boston as a delegate at the Harvard National Model United Nations. A former fellow of the Munroe Center for Social Inquiry, Bernards also worked as a student assistant at the Institute for Global/Local Action & Study, where he helped develop curriculum focused on Nepal for middle and high school students.
A political studies/urban studies major, Bernards has also been awarded a 2015-16 Fulbright Fellowship to conduct research in Indonesia.
