Claremont, Calif. (December 29, 2014) – This week in Sagehens Athletics saw the Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams open SCIAC play at Occidental, with the women earning a come-from-behind win with some clutch plays from several Pitzer student-athletes.

The Sagehens Women’s Basketball team was trailing 54-49 with 5:00 to play, but outscored Occidental 12-2 down the stretch to earn a 61-56 win over the Tigers in their SCIAC opener. Basha Brulee-Wills ’17, who had 15 points and 14 rebounds on the day, started the run with a lay-up and two foul shots to cut the lead to one. After Occidental pushed the lead to three, McKenna VanderKley ’17 followed with two foul shots to bring the Sagehens within a single point with 2:30 left.

In the final minute, Brulee-Wills went back to the foul line and hit the first to tie the score. She missed the second, but Amelia Hummel ’16 snuck in for the offensive rebound and a lay-up to give the Sagehens a 58-56 lead. Brulee-Wills added a defensive rebound on the next possession to help seal the win.

Pitzer student-athletes combined to scored 49 of the 61 points on the afternoon. In addition to the 15 for Brulee-Wills, VanderKley added a career-high 12, Hummel had nine, Anya Quiq ’18 had seven and Kacie Hitomi ’17 had six. The Sagehens will be back in action for two home games this week, facing La Verne on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. and Cal Lutheran on Saturday at 2 p.m.

The Men’s Basketball team was also in a tight battle in its game at Occidental, but came up on the short end as a late 10-0 run from the Tigers gave them a 74-65 win. The Sagehens also ended the 2014 calendar year with a narrow 58-53 loss to St. Joseph’s (Maine) despite 14 points from Hunter Lowry ’18. Men’s Basketball will host La Verne on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., followed by a home game with Cal Lutheran on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the second half of a doubleheader with the women’s team.

Swimming and Diving will be back in action this weekend at Haldeman Pool, facing Eastern power Stevens Institute on Friday at 10 a.m. and then hosting a tri-meet with La Verne and Caltech on Saturday at 11 a.m. The Sagehens Women’s Swimming and Diving team is ranked No. 14 in the nation (Stevens is ranked No. 7), while the Men’s Swimming and Diving team is ranked No. 23 (Stevens is ranked No. 11).
