Claremont, Calif. (December 4, 2014)–College Professor Emeritus John D. “Jack” Sullivan passed away on December 2, 2014. He had recently been diagnosed with cancer.
“Jack was a giant in our community and a wonderful colleague,” Pitzer College President Laura Skandera Trombley said. “He taught me and generations of students so much, and he will be greatly missed.”
After receiving his degree from Stanford University and teaching at Yale, Sullivan joined Pitzer in 1975 as a member of the Political Studies Field Group. As a scholar, he was known for his work in conflict and negotiation processes, policy analysis, and environmental and water policy. At Pitzer, he served in a variety of leadership positions, including director of administrative computing, acting dean of students, associate dean of faculty and acting dean of faculty. He was also deeply involved in the local community, serving as county natural resource director for the League of Women Voters of Los Angeles County. He retired from Pitzer in 2007.
