Claremont, Calif. ( November 25, 2013)—Pitzer College Dean of Faculty and Vice President for Academic Affairs Muriel Poston and Professor Emeritus of Philosophy James Bogen have been named American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) fellows. This year’s AAAS fellows will be presented with a certificate and rosette pin on February 15 during the 2014 AAAS Annual Meeting in Chicago.
Poston is being honored for improving undergraduate science education. The AAAS honor recognizes Poston’s work in higher education, at the National Science Foundation (NSF) and through professional societies.
A plant biologist with an interest in environmental studies, Poston served as the dean of the faculty at Skidmore College from 2005-10 and as acting vice president of academic affairs from 2010-11. Before coming to Pitzer in summer 2012, Poston was on loan from Skidmore as the division director for Human Resource Development Division in the Education and Human Resources Directorate at NSF, where she led eight programs that focused on supporting minority-serving institutions and under-represented groups in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Bogen was selected for his distinguished research in philosophy of science, including analysis of the epistemology of experimentation, mechanistic explanation, neuroimaging and the Hodgkin-Huxley model of action potential. Bogen taught at Pitzer from 1967 to 2002. He has written about the philosophy of science, the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein and the history of neuroscience. He is currently an adjunct professor in the department of history and philosophy of science at the University of Pittsburgh.
The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) is the world’s largest general scientific society, and publisher of the journal, Science as well as Science Translational Medicine and Science Signaling.
