Sagehen Round Up for the Week of November 18, 2013

Claremont, Calif. (November 25, 2013) This week in Sagehens Athletics saw a dramatic win from the Men’s Water Polo team in the opening round of the SCIAC Championships, and the Men’s Basketball team play two close games against scholarship programs from the NAIA.

Men’s Water Polo had a dramatic comeback against Chapman on Friday, winning 11-10 in sudden death overtime. The Sagehens trailed 10-8 in the second overtime, but Jarrod Gaut ’14 scored with just 0.2 seconds left to tie the score 10-10 and keep the game going. Men’s Water Polo finished fourth after falling to top-seeded Whittier in the semifinals 16-10 and to third-seeded Redlands 10-6 in the third-place match. Gaut added a goal (with just one second left in the first half) in his final collegiate match against Redlands to give him 48 on the year (second on the team). Stephen Vint ’15 added two goals in the win over Chapman and one against Redlands to end the year with 46 goals.

Men’s Basketball played a pair of NAIA opponents on the road this week and dropped close contests to Biola (73-70) and Westmont (77-69). Nicholas Nordale ’17 had 11 points against Biola and Xavyr Moss ’13 chipped in with 10. The Sagehens will be in action this week at the David Wells Classic, hosting UC Santa Cruz on Friday and facing Johns Hopkins at CMS on Saturday. The Women’s Basketball team (which had its lone game of the week at Hope International postponed) will host Linfield on Tuesday at 6 p.m. and then face UC Santa Cruz at CMS on Friday and host Arizona Christian on Saturday at the David Wells Classic.
