Claremont, Calif. (October 28, 2013) — For the fourth consecutive year, The Chronicle of Higher Education named Pitzer College as the top producer of Fulbright students and alumni among all US colleges in the “bachelor’s institutions” category. With twenty-two 2013-14 Fulbright Fellows, Pitzer had more Fulbright winners than many major research institutions, including Yale University, Stanford University and Columbia University. In recent years, approximately 10 percent of the College’s graduating class has won Fulbright Fellowships.
“The Fulbright program was built on the idea that creating understanding through international exchange ultimately creates a more peaceful and just world,” said Pitzer College President Laura Skandera Trombley, who was appointed by President Barack Obama to the 12-member J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board earlier this year. “At Pitzer, we are proud that our accomplished students are selected year after year to participate in not only a great adventure but a great mission.”
The Chronicle’s list of top Fulbright producers is based on the number of students and recent alumni who receive and accept offers to participate in the Fulbright US Student Program. Pitzer 2013-14 Fulbright Fellows are: Elisa Asdourian ’13, Sophie Beiers ’13, Ana Berry ’12, Sydney Calander ’13, Rachel Conrad ’13, Kristin Dobbin ’13, Karen Eisenhauer ’13, Alison Espinosa-Setchko ’13, Jason Fields ’12, Kayla Friedman-Barb ’13, Elizabeth Heinlein ’13, Acacia Hori ’13, Zara Howard ’13, Micah Huang ’13, Erin Komplin ’13, Joel Ledezma ’13, Gabriel Loewinger ’12, Lila Mendoza ’13, Hannah Miller ’13, Nathan Pensler ’13, Julianna Quinn ’13 and Jonathan Rice ’13.
“It’s remarkable that a college of 1,000 students can keep topping this ranking,” said Pitzer’s Associate Dean for Global and Local Programs Nigel Boyle, who serves as the College’s Fulbright Program adviser. “Pitzer’s immersive study abroad and local community engagement programming challenges our students both intellectually and viscerally, and these experiences tend to forge great Fulbright applicants.”
This year, The Claremont Colleges received 55 student Fulbrights, more than any research university.
