Pitzer College’s New LEED-Certified Residence Halls Win Design Award

13_PhaseII-LEED[1]Claremont, Calif. (September 30, 2013) — American Institute of Architects Orange County (AIAOC) recognized Pitzer College’s Residential Life Project Phase II with an Honor Award at its 2013 Design Awards on September 19, 2013. The project’s architects, carrier johnson + CULTURE, received the AIAOC’s top award in the Residential Program category.

“Phase II’s LEED Platinum design embodies Pitzer’s concern for the environment and its sense of social responsibility,” said Gordon R. Carrier, design principal at carrier johnson + CULTURE. “The design ‘reinvents’ the collegiate lifestyle with a self-contained community that blends living accommodations with outdoor learning opportunities, encouraging students to live on campus all four years, reducing their carbon footprint.”

The Los Angeles Business Journal also recognized Phase II with a Silver Real Estate Award for being one of the most sustainable new constructions in Los Angeles County and the City of Claremont Architectural Commission gave it a 2012 Excellence in Design Award for sustainable development.

Phase II, now known as West and East Halls, was completed in 2012. The mixed-use residential buildings are home to more than 300 students, the Mosbacher/Gartrell Center for Media Experimentation and Activism, the Pitzer Archive and Conference Center, the Kallick Family Gallery, the Office of Study Abroad and International Programs and a demonstration kitchen. With more than 40 sustainable features, Phase II earned LEED Platinum certification, the US Green Building Council’s highest possible endorsement.

PCL Constructors Inc. served as the general contractor on the project and Mia Lehrer + Associates was the landscape architect.

The American Institute of Architects Orange County is the third largest chapter of the American Institute of Architects in California. Established in 1857, the American Institute of Architects is the leading professional membership association for licensed architects, emerging professionals and allied partners.
