Sagehen Round Up for the Week of September 16, 2013

Claremont, Calif. (September 23, 2013) — This week in Sagehens Athletics saw Volleyball capture a thrilling win in its SCIAC opener, while the Men’s Water Polo team broke into the win column with two wins at Cal Baptist’s tournament.

Sara Ach ’14 and the Women’s Soccer team defeated La Verne 1-0 in their SCIAC opener on Wednesday.

Volleyball went the maximum five sets, and a little more, to take a 3-2 win at La Verne in its conference opener on Tuesday. The fifth set went to 16-14, as the Sagehens closed out with a 4-0 run, fighting off two match points, to get the win. Ellen Yamasaki ’15 had 18 assists, while Samantha Quesada-Diaz ’17 chipped in with three digs. Volleyball travels to nationally ranked Cal Lutheran on Tuesday, before returning home for two matches on Saturday, hosting Caltech at 1 p.m. and Occidental at 6 p.m.

Men’s Water Polo began the season 0-6 with five of the losses coming to teams ranked in the top 10 in the nation (including No. 1 USC and No. 2 UCLA). This weekend, though, the Sagehens had a spirited comeback to take an 11-9 win over host Cal Baptist at the Lancer Invite, and then cruised to a 17-6 non-league win over Occidental.  Stephen Vint ’15 had a goal in each match, while Austin Strong ’15 had a strong effort in goal against Cal Baptist, tallying six first-half saves. Carter Lipnick ’16 saw action in goal against Occidental and had a pair of saves, while Jarrod Gaut ’14 added a goal. The Sagehens will be at Air Force this weekend to face Mercyhurst, Air Force and Chapman on Friday and Saturday.

Women’s Soccer won its conference opener as well, defeating La Verne 1-0 on Wednesday, but then fell 1-0 to Occidental on Saturday.  Alyssa Kim ’17 earned her first collegiate start against La Verne, while Mary Stafford ’16, Ying Fry ’16, Sara Ach ’14 and Aminah Luqman ’17 all contributed to the win as well.  The Sagehens travel to CMS on Wednesday this week and then host Chapman on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Men’s Soccer had a 1-2 week, falling 1-0 on the road to Whittier on Wednesday, defeating Caltech 4-0 on Saturday and then dropping a 4-0 decision to No. 15 Texas-Dallas on Sunday. Four different goal-scorers contributed to the Caltech win, while Lawrence McDonald ’15 added an assist. Chase Abelson ’17 and Scout Pepper ’17 both started against UT Dallas on Sunday.  Men’s Soccer will travel to Redlands on Wednesday, before returning home to face Occidental on Saturday at 11 a.m.
