Sagehen Round Up for the Week of September 9, 2013

Claremont, Calif. (September 16, 2013) — This week, Sagehens Athletics saw Men’s Cross Country earn the top score among Division III schools at the UC Riverside Invitational, while Men’s Water Polo hosted No. 1-ranked USC and No. 10 UC San Diego at the Haldeman Pool.

In Men’s Cross Country, Paul Messana ’17 finished in 25:52.8 at the annual UC Riverside Invitational, the 14th-fasted time in program’s history at the event. Pitzer-Pomona was 10th out of 23 teams, but first among non-scholarship teams, edging out Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (275 to 288) in a close battle between the two top teams in the NCAA West Region in the preseason poll, while La Verne was in 13th place. The Sagehen Women’s Cross Country team finished ninth out of 16 teams, as Camille Matonis ’15 crossed the line in 22:30.6, good for 42nd, and essentially in a three-way tie for the top time on the team.

Men’s Water Polo continued its brutal early-season schedule by facing four ranked teams this weekend, including three in the top 10. Top-ranked USC and No. 10 UC San Diego visited the Haldeman Pool on Saturday, while the Sagehens faced No. 18 Redlands and No. 9 UC Irvine on Sunday at Redlands. Stephen Vint ’15 had a goal against UC San Diego in a 9-5 loss and scored twice against UC Irvine. Timmy Hardman ’17 had his first two collegiate goals in the UC Irvine match as well.

Football traveled to Menlo and came up on the short end of a 35-6 score.  Luc Dark Fleury ’16 had a sack and forced a fumble on the defensive side of the ball, while Nicky LaCivita ’15 ranked among the leaders in tackles with five. Nick Urban ’17 also saw action at linebacker and contributed four unassisted tackles and a pass break up.

After being idle last week, Volleyball and Women’s Soccer open SCIAC play this week against La Verne. Volleyball travels down Bonita Avenue on Tuesday evening for a road match, while Women’s Soccer entertains the Leopards at home on Wednesday.
