Pitzer College Professor Offers a New Perspective on America’s Favorite Pastime

 Arriba Baseball! A Collection of Latino/a Baseball FictionClaremont, Calif. (July 23, 2013) — Pitzer College Assistant Professor of English and World Literature Melissa Hidalgo’s short story “So Much for the Cubs” appears in the new anthology, Arriba Baseball! A Collection of Latino/a Baseball Fiction. The anthology is the first collection of baseball stories by and about Latinos/as.

“So Much for the Cubs” is a coming-out story about a lesbian graduate student who takes her father to his first Chicago Cubs game at Wrigley Field.

Hidalgo specializes in Chicana/o literature, comparative US ethnic and postcolonial literatures and cultures, gender and queer studies. Her course, Sports in Literature and Culture, examines gender, race, class, politics and the influence of corporate power in athletics.

The 15 stories in Arriba Baseball explore geographical and cultural arenas that transcend traditional notions of the game. The collection was edited by Robert Paul Moreira and includes works by Dagoberto Gilb, Norma Elia Cantú and Christine Granados.
