Claremont, Calif. (October 31, 2012) — For the third consecutive year, The Chronicle of Higher Education ranked Pitzer College as the top producer of Fulbright students and alumni among all US undergraduate colleges in the “bachelor’s institutions” category. This is the ninth year that Pitzer College students and alumni are national leaders in Fulbright Fellowships per thousand students. With nineteen 2012-13 Fulbright Fellows, Pitzer had more Fulbright winners than many major research institutions, including Stanford University, Cornell University and Princeton University.
Pitzer is ranked first among all US liberal arts colleges. In recent years, approximately 10 percent of The College’s graduating class has won Fulbright Fellowships.
“Our students’ passion, achievements and unbridled curiosity about the world beyond our borders have put Pitzer at the forefront of Fulbright awardees,” said Pitzer College President Laura Skandera Trombley. “The Fulbright program is predicated on the idea that giving accomplished students a chance to teach and research abroad increases understanding and compassion throughout the world. Our students, alumni, faculty and staff are proud to be part of that mission.”
Pitzer Fulbright Fellows from the 2011-12 academic year are: Rio Bauce ’12, Micaela Fein ’12, Colin Flynn ’12, Vincent Giannotti ’12, Laura Gutierrez ’12, Chloe Hans-Barrientos ’12, Alex James ’12, Emily Kawahara ’12, Cody Klock ’12, Zack London ’12, Jesse Mapstead ’12, Brooke Marcy ’12, Caroline Martin ’12, Anna O’Kain ’12, Javid Riahi ’11, Alexa Schlomo-Carrasco ’12, Ian Schoen ’12, Miriam Stiefel ’12 and Elise Wanger ’12.
Associate Dean for Global-Local Programs Nigel Boyle, who serves as Pitzer’s Fulbright Program adviser, said that many of Pitzer’s Fulbright Fellows come from groups often underrepresented among Fulbright applicants.
“We’ve succeeded in engaging the full breadth of the student body,” Boyle said. “Pitzer students tend to be independent thinkers. Among our Fulbright winners, one student is researching ideas about masculinity in different gay subcultures in Barcelona, another is studying labor organizing among Bangladeshi garment workers and another is using music and soccer to help teach English to Malaysian high school students.”
