Pitzer College Baseball and Softball Players Named to All-SCIAC Teams

Claremont, Calif. (May 22, 2012) — Pitzer College student and Sagehen Baseball starting pitcher Travis Rooke-Ley ’12 and third basemen Ernest (E.J.) Lopez ’15 were named first-team All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC). Outfielder Erik Munzer ’13 was named to the second team. Softball first baseman Brianna (Bri) Marcantoni ’12 was named second-team All-SCIAC for Softball.

Rooke-Ley earned first-team honors after a dominant senior year when he stepped in as the No. 1 starter. Rooke-Ley was 8-3 overall, including 7-1 in conference games. He was 6-0 with an 0.73 earned run average in his first seven conference starts, putting the Sagehens in position for a late-season run at the conference title. Rooke-Ley was also named Pitzer’s Most Outstanding Male Student Athlete in April.

Lopez stepped into the starting line-up in the first weeks of the season and never came back out, playing both second base and third base over the course of the year. He batted .338 with 32 RBI for the Sagehens and played solid defense for a team that sometimes started an all-freshman infield. Lopez was also named to the second team All-West Region by D3Baseball.com.

Munzer earned All-SCIAC honors for the third time in his career, as he provided versatility in the batting order, sometimes batting leadoff, sometimes batting clean-up. He is hitting .338 with two homers and 33 RBI on the year, while stealing a team-high 12 bases and playing outstanding defense in center field.

Marcantoni capped off her standout career with the Sagehens by leading the team in home runs (four) and RBI (29). She had several clutch hits in extra innings to help the Sagehens to six walk-off wins at home and had a fielding percentage of .988 at first base.

The Sagehen Baseball team finished second in the SCIAC with a 19-9 record, one game out of first, and is 25-12-1 overall, ranked sixth in the West Region.
The Sagehen Softball team set a school record for wins in a season with 22 and qualified for the SCIAC Tournament for the first time since 2008 by finishing third in the conference with a 15-9 regular season record.
