Pitzer College President Laura Skandera Trombley to Speak at Los Angeles Business Council’s Sustainability Summit

Claremont, Calif. (April 13, 2012) — Pitzer College President Laura Skandera Trombley will be a featured speaker at the Los Angeles Business Council’s 6th Annual Sustainability Summit at the Getty Center on April 27. Trombley will speak about the role of sustainability at Pitzer and in higher education during the “Salon of Masters” panel at 8 a.m.

This year’s summit, “Local Energy, Global Markets,” will be hosted by the Los Angeles Business Council, the Getty and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. Featured speakers include Mayor Villaraigosa, Chairwoman Mary Nichols of the California Air Resources Board, and lawyer and former US Secretary of Commerce Mickey Kantor.

Dedicated to sustainability and renewable energy development in Los Angeles, the summit will highlight the most promising innovations in green building, energy efficiency and water conservation. It will also explore the potential impact of these developments on US and global markets.

Pitzer College has been at the forefront of sustainability efforts among higher education institutions through its academic courses, practical campus-wide programs and environmentally-minded construction projects. The College was recognized for its efforts in The Princeton Review’s 2011 Guide to 311 Green Colleges. Pitzer was the first college in the country to earn Gold LEED Certification for a student housing project when four new mixed-use residential buildings opened in 2007. With its low-water landscaping and other conservation efforts, Pitzer has cut its water usage in half since 2002. In 2007, President Trombley and the leaders of more than 280 colleges and universities signed a pact to help combat global warming by aiming to make their campuses “carbon neutral” as soon as possible.

Each year, the Sustainability Summit draws more than 600 business, nonprofit and civic leaders. Past speakers have included US Senator Barbara Boxer and California Governor Jerry Brown.
