Claremont, Calif. (April 9, 2012) — Pitzer College student Hannah Miller ’13 has been awarded a Critical Language Scholarship (CLS), a program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of State.
A double major in global health and Asian studies, Miller will be placed for eight weeks this summer in an Intensive Language Institute in Shanghai, China to study intermediate Chinese.
Miller first became interested in Chinese in eighth grade, after taking a trip through China. She began studying the language during her senior year in high school and spent a semester abroad on the Pitzer in China program.
“I hope to use my Chinese language skills in a future career in public health, but for now I just really enjoy learning the language,” Miller said.
This year, the CLS program received more than 5,200 applications and awarded 631 scholarships, making CLS one of the most competitive scholarship competitions in the US. For the summer of 2012, the CLS program will run intensive summer language institutes overseas in thirteen critical foreign languages.
Miller is currently abroad in Dharamsala, India in a Tibetan studies program.
