Claremont, Calif. (January 17, 2012) — This past week saw the Sagehen Men’s Basketball team capture two wins to move into a tie for first place in the SCIAC and set up a big neighborhood rivalry game with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, while the Women’s Swimming and Diving team pulled out an exciting come-from-behind win over Redlands.
Men’s Basketball improved to 3-0 in the SCIAC with a 60-51 road win over Redlands and a 71-47 home win over Caltech, putting it in a tie for first place with CMS. The Redlands game saw the Sagehen defense hold the Bulldogs scoreless for a span of 12:15 overlapping both halves as they used a 13-0 run to take a 34-26 lead, then held on down the stretch at the foul line. Po Grant ’13 had 10 points on 4-6 shooting from the floor in the Caltech win, while Joe Eyen ’15 and Adrian Brandon ’15 each broke into the scoring column as well.
Pitzer-Pomona and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps are the only two teams left undefeated in SCIAC play at 3-0 and face each other at the Rains Center this Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. CMS is yet to lose a game this season (13-0) and is ranked No. 17 in the nation in the most recent NCAA poll.
The Women’s Basketball team picked up its first SCIAC win of the season with a 62-41 win over Caltech on Saturday. Ruthie Shapiro ’15 had eight points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals for the Sagehens, which were missing starters Emi Hashizume ’14 and Erin Edmonds ’14 with injuries. The Sagehens will be back in action on Thursday at Whittier before returning home to face La Verne on Saturday at 5 p.m. (followed by the men’s basketball game against La Verne at 7 p.m.).
Women’s Swimming and Diving squeaked out a 156-142 win over Redlands on Saturday, as it came from behind in the final few events. Avery Barron ’15 helped the Sagehen cause by finishing second in the one-meter diving competition with 162.5 points. Mari Pettibone ’15 also gave the Sagehens some key points by finishing fourth in the 1000-yard freestyle and fifth in the 200-yard backstroke.
Andrew Savage ’15 had a strong performance in the men’s swimming meet, as he helped the 400-yard freestyle relay team break the previous pool record with a time of 3:13.36, but Redlands established the new mark by edging out the Sagehens in the race with a time of 3:12.63. Savage also finished second in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.77 and third in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.73.
The Swimming and Diving teams will be back in Haldeman Pool on Saturday when they face Caltech at 10:30 a.m.
