Pitzer College Director of Vaccine Development Named Keck Graduate Institute’s Jacobs Visiting Professor

Claremont, Calif. (December 14, 2010) — Dr Larry Grill, director of Pitzer College’s Marquet/Ferrer Vaccine Research Center was named Keck Graduate Institute’s 2010-11 Joe and Vi Jacobs Visiting Professor. Grill is the first Pitzer faculty member to receive a visiting endowed professorship at KGI.

Joe Jacobs founded Jacobs Engineering Group, which provides construction and engineering design services to an international roster of clients. The gift he and his wife bestowed on KGI provides support for bioscience ethics, teaching and research.

Grill will be advising a group of KGI Team Masters Project students who are exploring the biological questions around future outcomes for transgenic animals. He will also teach courses on biologics regulation, pharmaceutical development and biotech-based therapeutics at KGI.

Grill continues to lead Pitzer’s Vaccine Research Center which works in partnership with the University of Botswana to develop low-cost vaccines for some of the world’s most destructive viruses, including rotavirus – a common cause of diarrhea that claims the lives of more than 500,000 children under age five each year- and lumpy skin disease, which can destroy entire herds of cattle.
