Claremont, Calif. (August 25, 2010) — Judith Grabiner, the Flora Sanborn Pitzer Professor of Mathematics, received a Lester R. Ford Award from the Mathematical Association of America for her article, “Why did Lagrange ‘Prove’ the Parallel Postulate?” published in The American Mathematical Monthly.
Grabiner has authored numerous books and articles including The Origins of Cauchy’s Rigorous Calculus, The Calculus as Algebra and the forthcoming A Historian Looks Back: The Calculus as Algebra and Selected Writing.
“Generations of Pitzer students have been fortunate to be a student of Professor Grabiner’s and it is utterly fitting that she be recognized for her excellence in scholarship with the Lester R. Ford Award,” said President Laura Skandera Trombley.
The Lester R. Ford Award, established in 1964, is given to authors of expository articles published in The American Mathematical Monthly. The awards are named for Lester R. Ford, Sr., a distinguished mathematician, editor of The American Mathematical Monthly and president of the Mathematical Association of America.
