Pitzer College Student Receives Peace Corps Placement in Romania

Claremont, Calif. (February 16, 2010) — Pitzer College congratulates Richard McKinney ’10, recipient of a 27 month Peace Corps placement in Romania.

He is a triple major in psychology, philosophy and political science at Pitzer.

McKinney will begin his placement in Romania this September where he will work with at-risk youths by helping the community develop programs to assist young people.

The Peace Corps receives more then 15,000 applications annually for 4,000 positions across the world. With the recent economic recession, the Peace Corps has become increasingly competitive with only 26% of applicants accepted this year.

Since 1961, Peace Corps volunteers serve in 74 countries in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Central and South America, Europe and the Middle East. Collaborating with local community members, volunteers work in areas like education, youth outreach, community development, the environment and information technology.
