Pitzer College Named to the 2009 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll

Claremont, Calif. (March 2, 2010) — Pitzer College was named to the 2009 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll by the Corporation for National and Community Service.

Through the Pitzer College Center for California Cultural and Social Issues (CCCSI,) Pitzer students donate over 100,000 hours annually to local and global organizations. Students work in programs that range from tutoring at-risk kids and helping abused women and children to providing hands-on environment lessons.

“Advocating for social justice through community-based teaching and learning is a pinnacle part of what social responsibility means at Pitzer College and we appreciate the on-going recognition of the Corporation for National and Community Service of these efforts,” said Tessa Hicks, director of CCCSI.

The Corporation for National and Community Service oversees the Honor Roll in collaboration with the Department of Education, Department of Housing and Urban Development, Campus Compact and the American Council on Education. Honorees are chosen based on a series of selection factors including scope and innovation of service projects, percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service and the extent to which the school offers academic service-learning courses.
