Pitzer College Professor Awarded a Creative Capital | Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant

Claremont, Calif. (December 1, 2009) — Pitzer College Associate Professor Bill Anthes received a 2009 Creative Capital | Warhol Foundation Art Writers Grant to complete his third book, Hock E Aye VI: Edgar Heap of Birds. Anthes teaches art history at Pitzer.

The book will frame Edgar Heap of Birds’ work in relation to other Native American artists and place his career in dialogue with developments in contemporary art in a global context since the 1960s.

“It is an honor to work with an artist of Edgar’s stature. I’m also thrilled that the project will be supported by Creative Capital and the Andy Warhol Foundation,” said Anthes.

The Creative Capital | Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant Program supports individual writers whose work addresses contemporary visual art. It is designed to encourage and reward writing about contemporary art to create a broader audience and strengthen the field to ensure that critical writing remains a valued mode of engaging the visual arts.

Other publications by Anthes include Native Moderns: American Indian Painting, 1940-1960 published in 2006 and Reframing Photography: Theory and Practice, co-authored with Rebekah Modrak, is due out in spring 2010. He plans to finish writing his third book by 2010 with a publication date in 2011.
