Pitzer College Seniors and Alumnae Win Fourteen Fulbright Fellowships

Claremont, Calif. (May 5, 2009)—Pitzer College congratulates Jeffrey Bandler ’09, Tara Beatty ’08, Austin Brawner ’09, Owen Brewer ’09, Magee Clegg ’09, Roxanne Cruz de Hoyos ’09, Brian Dolphin’ 09, Michele Hatchette ’09, Alex Kenyon ’09, Joshua Lo ’09, Francine Mireles ’09, Jason Morales ’09, Laura Beck-Pancer ’08 and Yasuhiro Sekiyama ’09, awardees of Fulbright Fellowships.

Bandler, who majors in globalization culture and studied abroad in Thailand, will spend his Fulbright year teaching in Malaysia.

Beatty, who majored in anthropology, will spend her Fulbright year in Portugal. While at Pitzer, she studied abroad in Brazil.

Brawner, who majors in economics and studied abroad with Pitzer in Italy, will spend his Fulbright year teaching English in Macau.

Brewer, who double majors in international and intercultural studies and romance languages, will spend his Fulbright year teaching English in Taiwan. He also studied abroad in China.

Clegg, who majors in media studies and studied abroad in India, will spend his Fulbright year in the Philippines researching “Rice is Life: The Effect of the Global Price of Rice on the Filipinos.”

Cruz de Hoyos, who double majors in environmental and political studies and environmental science, will spend her Fulbright year researching “The Villages Left Behind: The Environmental and Social Impacts of Rural to Urban Migration on Subsistence Farming in Nepal.” She studied abroad with Pitzer in Nepal and Pitzer in Costa Rica.

Dolphin, who majors in philosophy, science and religious metaphysics and minors in music, will spend his Fulbright year researching “Nada Brahma: The Philosophy of Hindustani Music” in India. He studied abroad with Pitzer in Nepal.

Hatchette, who majors in international and intercultural studies, will spend her Fulbright year teaching English in Indonesia. While at Pitzer, she studied abroad in Botswana and Spain.

Kenyon, who majors in psychology and studied abroad in Nepal, will spend his Fulbright year teaching in Malaysia.

Lo, who majors in sociology and religious studies, will spend his Fulbright year teaching English in Korea.

Mireles, who majors in East Asian cultural studies, will spend her Fulbright year researching “Changing Xiào: Filial Piety and Healthcare of Elderly Women” in China. She studied abroad with Pitzer in China and Pitzer Summer Study in Japan.

Morales, who majors in political studies and studied abroad in Pitzer in Italy, will spend his Fulbright year teaching English in Spain.

Beck-Pancer, who majored in global health and social justice, will spend her Fulbright year teaching English in Indonesia. While at Pitzer, she studied abroad in Brazil.

Sekiyama, who majors in economics, will spend his Fulbright year teaching in Korea.

Last year, Pitzer College students and alumni has been awarded more Fulbright Fellowships than any other college or university in the United States. Since 2002, Pitzer College has been awarded more Fulbright Fellowships per capita than any other college or university in the U.S. Additionally, 72% of Pitzer students study abroad, compared to under 2% nationwide.
