Claremont, Calif. (October 31, 2008) – The exhibit Beggars and Choosers: Motherhood is Not a Class Privilege in Americawill open on November 6, 2008 and run through December 5, 2008.
The show contains over 50 photographs exploring public perceptions of poor women who have children— and the assumption that motherhood should be associated with economic status, and reserved for women with adequate resources. The images in the show reflect the dignity and determination of mothers often defined as women who should not reproduce.
The show was organized by Rickie Solinger and is associated with her book Beggars and Choosers: How the Politics of Choice Shapes Adoption, Abortion and Welfare in the United States. Rickie Solinger also wrote Wake Up Little Susie: Single Pregnancy and Race Before Roe v. Wade and edited Abortion Wars: A Half Century of Struggle.
The exhibit will be held at Room 107 in the Gold Student Center and the Grove House Hinshaw Gallery on the Pitzer College campus. The show is presented at Pitzer by the Pitzer Feminist Coalition, with support from the Art Collective, Associated Students of Pomona College, Black Student Union, Campus Life, Feminist Majority of the Claremont Colleges, Grove House Committee, Intercollegiate Women’s Studies of the Claremont Colleges, Latino Student Union, New Resource Students, PAct, Pomona College Department of Art and Art History, Women’s Union and Student Senate. The exhibition also received support from the Open Society Institute, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and the Puffin Foundation Ltd.
