Pitzer College Senior Wins Hyogo Earthquake Memorial Research Institute Scholarship

Claremont, Calif (April 20, 2009)–Pitzer College senior Francine Mireles received a scholarship to participate in the 2009 summer school program at the Hyogo Earthquake Memorial Research Institute for the 21st Century in Kobe, Japan.

Mireles majors in East Asian culture and studied abroad in Pitzer in China and Pitzer Summer Study in Japan. While at Pitzer, she also volunteered with Common Ground in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina and served as a resident assistant.

The Hyogo International Summer School will focus on the role of local governments and citizens toward the formation of a framework of cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region around issues of human security and multicultural symbiosis.
