Former California state senator speaks Oct. 12
CLAREMONT, Calif. (Oct. 11, 2005) — Tom Hayden, social activist and former California state senator, will present a talk titled “Los Angeles and the Planet of Slums” as part one of the three-part Redefining Los Angeles lecture series at Pitzer College.
Hayden is the author of numerous works, including Street Wars: Gangs and the Future of Violence (2004); Reunion: A Memoir (1988); and Rebellion in Newark: Official Violence and Ghetto Response (1967). Hayden is teaching a class, Social Movements Through the Ages, at Pitzer this semester.
The talk will be at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12 in the McConnell Founders Room. The event is free and open to the public.
Part two will feature Josh Sides, Whitsett Professor of California History at California State University Northridge. Sides’ talk, “The Making of Black Los Angeles,” will be at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 2 in the McConnell Founders Room.
Sides is the author of numerous articles on Los Angeles and urban history, and L.A. City Limits: African American Los Angeles from the Great Depression to the Present (2004).
Matt Garcia, associate professor of American civilization, Ethnic Studies, and history at Brown University and Interim Director, Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America, Brown University, will present “Requiem For a Barrio: Race, Space and Redevelopment in Claremont, California,” at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 22 as part three of the series.
Garcia is the author of A World of Its Own: Race, Labor, and Citrus in the Making of Greater Los Angeles, 1900-1970 (2004).
