Tutoring, Mentoring & College Access

In response to the high demand for academic help for youth due to COVID-19, the Community Engagement Center has created an online tutoring/mentoring page to facilitate connections between the campus community and partners. Utilizing this page, CEC can help with the matching process of tutors/mentors with the needs of the local youth. A variety of resources are available for those working in tutoring and mentoring below through the clickable buttons. Please also check our CEC front page for any events and training pertaining to community engagement through education.In this area of engagement the CEC will [dedicate its resources to] provide programmatic support to community partners who are addressing education equity issues in our community through tutoring, mentorship, and similar programs. This support will be provided through student recruitment campaigns, student engagement and technology support for community partners and student clubs  to facilitate remote programming.

Students

For tutoring and mentoring opportunities you will need a laptop with internet access (online resources button has useful information on technology support from Pitzer), as you will conduct appointments with youth via a partner specific schedule through a video chat platform such as Zoom or Skype. For students that are going to be involved with college access projects, your work will be based upon specific instructions given by community partners. You should keep a steady line of communication with those community partners, with some of their information being on our separate buttons above.

Faculty

Faculty that have SRX class based partnerships with tutoring, mentorship, and college access organizations, should keep a steady line of communication with community partners. Support for processing of students’ clearance paperwork, student training/preparedness to work with community partners and other factors of setting up your class based community engagement work is essential. Community Partners

Community engagement work at our college primarily happens with SRX (social responsibility praxis) courses that are a graduation requirement for students and regularly have an internship and/or project component that works with a community partner. But our campus community is also open to other collaborations such as service days, virtual tour resources, supporting college access campaigns, etc.
